Zemi Art Gallery
Redcliffe Quay, St John's
Zemi Art Gallery is a funky boutique in the trendy Redcliffe Quay courtyard that features traditional Antiguan and Barbudan artwork with a twist. An indigenous word that means “God” or “Good Luck Spirit,” Zemi was given to the shop by the native Caribs.
Zemi Art Gallery aims to capture the essence of indigenous artistic expressions and the authentic Caribbean culture via a modern and unique approach to local arts and crafts. It is the Gallery’s objective to introduce to tourists and the general public the great wealth of handmade and exclusive artwork and craft produced in Antigua and surrounding islands.
The artwork on display at Zemi touches on the island’s heritage and local customs in a new, fresh way. Visitors have trouble keeping their jaws from dropping on the floor at all the unique pieces available at this shop. Nothing you find here is “Made in China.” Everything is made either by Stephen or one of several local artists. If it’s sold at Zemi, it cannot be sold anywhere else on the island, which makes everything one of a kind. They sell a wide selection of t-shirts with Carib designs on them for kids and adults, painted Calabash bowls and masks, painted wooden platters and bowls, painted metal fish, and other local items.
