Barbuda

Virtually untouched, the isle of Barbuda whose capital is Codrington is a natural wonder, just 30 miles north of Antigua. Renowned for its pink sand beaches, crystal clear waters, lush, dense landscape and a diversity of rare flora and fauna, you can feel in harmony with nature as you absorb the delicate beauty of this island utopia.

Bordered by the deep blue Atlantic Ocean on one side and the crystal clear Caribbean Sea on the other, the 60 square mile island is perfectly suited for snorkelling and watersports.

Barbuda’s virtually unspoiled landscape forms the perfect eco-system for one hundred and eighty-six known species of birds that inhabit the island. The Codrington Lagoon is home to the largest Frigate Bird colony in the Caribbean. In the breeding season between September and March, nearly 5,000 of these magnificent birds inhabit the lagoon. This glossy, black bird can have a wingspan of up to eight feet with the male birds having a bright red throat sack that is inflated as he competes for a female.

Barbuda is just a short 90-minute ferry ride from Antigua on the Island Escape Ferry or a 20-minute hop by plane.

What to do in Barbuda

The Frigate Bird Sanctuary

The Codrington Lagoon National Park stretches approximately 16.5 miles and encompasses the entire west coast of Barbuda. The lagoon is one of the few pristine mangrove lagoons in the Caribbean. The Codrington Lagoon supports the largest frigate bird colony in the Caribbean and the western hemisphere with around 5,000 birds. These birds have a wingspan of four to five feet and travel between the Caribbean and the Galapagos Islands during the mating seasons. At breeding sesaon the males have a remarkable scarlot throat pouch which inflates like a ballon. The colony can be visited by a short boat trip with a knowledgeable guide.

Martello Tower

The Martello Tower is located on the pink sand beach area known as the River. It was initially known as River Fort and was built to defend the main anchorage and entry route of the southern approaches to Barbuda. It was armed with six cannons that could quickly be repositioned in any direction. The tower today is the major historical site and attraction on Barbuda.

Two Foot Bay and the Caves

The caves at Two Foot bay run along the sea cliffs and are interesting and full of history. Barbudans have camped in the caves for centuries and have given them names such as “The Fridge”, which as its name suggests is cool and breezy. Inside Indian Cave it is possible to see drawings (petroglyphs) left by the original inhabitants of Barbuda, the Arawaks or the Siboney. Nature lovers will find evidence of bats, crabs, huge iguanas, tropic birds and other interesting flaura and fauna.
